With the full support of the NHL, the Philadelphia Flyers, and Comcast, “Cold War in Philly” is an 80-minute documentary that details the infamous 1976 match-up between the Philadelphia Flyers and the much heralded Russian Red Army Hockey team. Players from the Soviet team brought their fast skating, quick shooting, and overall toughness to the NHL with great success... Until they came to Philadelphia. 

 

Our story delves into the political climate of the time, both in the USSR and here in the USA. Through interviews with the alumni (past and present), staff, press, and fans, the film’s main storyline serves as a snapshot of the Flyers and the Philadelphia fan base at that time. We explore how hockey, as a sport, was affected by the way the Russians played and by their dominance of the world at the time.

 

By interviewing the actual players who faced the Russians on that cold January day in 1976, we examine everything leading up to the game, the game itself, and the aftermath. This is not a socio-political documentary but a historical look back at a day that is revered by the organization and their fan base.
